National Home Improvement Month + Tips From Jennie Garth

May is National Home Improvement Month and the MOTRIN® Brand has partnered with actress and mom, Jennie Garth, to provide tips on how to “Make It Happen,” when it comes to DIY projects during the weekend.

Jennie’s tips include:  

    • Take care of yourself! DIY projects can be tough. I keep MOTRIN® products close to my tool belt for those inevitable aches and pains. I’ve also learned that it’s important to warm up and stretch prior to and after any big projects. You wouldn’t hit the gym without stretching, so why would you start a physically demanding DIY project without a little prep-work?
    • Paint, Paint, Paint! A fresh coat of paint goes a long way. I recently brought some old, sad looking chairs back to life with a fresh coat of pink paint. It’s a great way to salvage something that holds a special place in your heart but that maybe looks a little dated. And since it’s just paint, you can go a little crazy and try bold, fun colors because if you don’t like it, you can always repaint!
    • Create a Mock-up. Be meticulous about measuring and laying things out with craft paper or tape before starting a project! Before I build anything for my home I create a paper cutout of the piece and tape it to the wall or the floor so I can see how it will fill the space. Better to do it that way first than build or buy something that won’t fit in your home. This is also a great way to involve your kids and teach them how to use a ruler or tape measure.
    • Make Your Own Knobs! It may seem like a small thing, but by changing the knobs on your cabinets or dressers you can create a whole new vibe for a space. Look at craft and fabric stores for interesting materials to attach to flat or rounded knobs with strong glue and you can truly personalize your piece of furniture. It is easy to do and relatively inexpensive and can really add a POP to your storage.
    • Just Add Wallpaper – Add a colorful and expressive piece of wallpaper or decorative craft paper to the back of a medicine cabinet or bookshelf to spice up the space and add an element of surprise to an otherwise basic piece of furniture. This is easy to do and will make you smile every time you open that cabinet or grab a book from the shelf. You can use leftover wallpaper you already have, or visit a craft store to find a huge selection of options. 
    • A Little Wire Goes a Long Way – One of my favorite projects in my house was creating a space for my jewelry. I bought some simple, inexpensive wire at the hardware store and strung it along a wall in my closet to display my jewelry. That way it’s all neatly spread out in front of me when I’m getting ready in the morning. I can see all of my options and it takes the scramble out of my morning routine.
    • Don’t Buy Artwork – Create Your Own! Create meaningful artwork that reflects your personality and life. It’s much cheaper than purchasing works from a gallery and it will really say something about you. Just grab a canvas at an art supply store and have fun! This is another great project to do with the kids. 

Celebrity Trainer, Ashley Borden offers these great tips:

  • Be prepared: Think through the details of your projects and gather everything you’ll need in advance. Will you be outside and need sunscreen? Will you need something comfortable to kneel on? Do you have all the tools you’ll need? By organizing everything you’ll need from start to finish you’ll be able to dive right into the project over the weekend and get it done more quickly and safely.
  • Wear clothing that is functional as well as cute: Whether you’re ramping up your fitness routine or tackling a project around your house, get into the right frame of mind by wearing an outfit that you feel good in and that’s something you love. If you feel frumpy and sloppy you won’t feel motivated! Make sure you have the proper gear, including stable, protective footwear, and clothes that fit and make you feel good about yourself! Whether you’re inside or out, dress accordingly. When outdoors, wear light colored sport clothing with breathable fabrics. They will keep you cool and help you avoid any body chaffing.
  • Stretch/strengthen: This doesn’t take a lot of time but it makes a big difference! Warm up those muscles before you get going and then stretch them out again at the conclusion of your project. Just because you were not “at the gym” doesn’t mean your body doesn’t need to stretch out before and after a long DIY day!
  • Recovery: Stay hydrated and make sure you recover! Keep at least 8 oz. of water with you as you attack your projects. Set a reminder on your phone to hydrate every 15 minutes. To really treat those muscles, consider taking a 15-20 min hot bath with some Epsom salt at the end of your day. Sip on a cold glass of water during your bath and relax. I also like to keep MOTRIN® products close at hand for my aches and pains.
  • Move with purpose: Many injuries I see result from being clumsy or absent minded when completing a task. Moving furniture, lifting heavy, awkward items, gardening, and painting – all of these tasks can be recipes for injury if you are not purposeful. I always tell myself, and my clients, to focus on the task at hand. Picture yourself completing the task before you do it. For example, if you are picking up a heavy bag; see your correct body position and engage your core before you pick it up and move it.

Make It Happen Stretches/Exercises:

Add these stretches and toning moves to your daily routine to feel better before and after any physically demanding project. You’ll feel looser and leaner and ready to “Make It Happen.”

    • The “I’m cleaning under the couch on my hands and knees” back stretch: You know that great stretch when you arch and round your spine to really stretch those back muscles? Multi-task and peek under the couch for that missing remote while you’re at it. Alternate arching and rounding your spine, 5x each way.
    • The “I’ve been avoiding it but it’s finally time to tackle the yardwork” shoulder stretch: While standing tall, interlace your hands behind your back. Try to reach down toward the floor and straighten your arms as much as you can. Raise your chest high and keep your eyes on the horizon. You will feel a big shoulder harness stretch around the both shoulders. Hold for 30 seconds. Ready! Set! Dust!
    • The “I will paint this room by myself in one afternoon” triceps stretch: Start by putting your arms up over your head and bend your right arm so that your forearm hangs down. With your left hand grab your right elbow and pull it toward your head. Lean to the left and really open up that rib cage. Hold stretch. Switch sides and repeat with opposite arm. Do three rounds on each side. Then grab that paint roller and get moving!
    • The “I can look for dust bunnies while I do strengthen my core” plank: Lying on the floor, get into plank position supporting your body with your forearms and your tip toes, keeping your back and legs fully extended and straight. Hold this position for 30 seconds while you survey the floor for dust bunnies. Do five sets.
    • The “I can pick up the toys while toning my legs and tush” squat: Survey that playroom floor and see what needs tidying. Stand with knees shoulder width apart and drop into a squat. Be mindful of your position and ensure your knees don’t extend over your toes. At the bottom of the squat, pick something up and put it where it belongs. Repeat until the playroom is clean. 

Remember to talk to your doctor before starting or changing any exercise routine and always use product as directed.

    I make stuff happen when I need to. I am busy and I find that lists help me keep myself organized.

    Motrin definitely helps me make it happen on the weekends. Between headaches and little aches and pains, it’s a lifesaver! I try to drink a smoothie in the morning for energy on a long, busy Saturday or Sunday.
