I will be one of the first to admit that I rarely turn the can or jar over and look at the facts.  I normally purchase based on previous brand experience (usually brands I grew up with or know are high quality) and sale price.  If it’s on sale, I stock up on it.  If it’s a brand I like and on sale, I seriously stock up on it.  So when I learned about the Facts Up Front Campaign, I was intrigued.

What is the mission of the Facts Up Front initiative?  It is to help consumers make informed choices by putting key information from the Nutrition Facts Panel on the front of the package.  This information will be useful to us and our families in the decisions we make when shopping.  Ya know, I didn’t even notice the labels on the front of the packages I had purchased recently until I was invited to participate in this campaign…and now I’m excited to share it with you!

Facts Up Front was launched as a joint initiative of the Grocery Manufacturers Association and Food Marketing Institute, which represents more than 1,500 food wholesale and retailers, to provide busy consumers (like me and you) with the information we need to make informed decisions when we’re shopping.  There are many companies that I’m familiar with (and you probably are too) that are implementing Facts Up Front on their branded products, private label products or store brands.

What is displayed on the Facts Up Front labels?  The labels display how many calories and how much saturated fat, sodium and sugar is in each serving.  Some labels may even include information about other good nutrients, such as calcium and fiber.  FactsUpFront.org is a resource where consumers can learn more about the label, how to read it, and how to build a healthful diet.

You can find products that are bearing the Facts Up Front label in stores now.  In the months to come, you’ll begin to notice more and more of your favorite foods with the Facts Up Front labels.  Some of the labels I noticed in our pantry included Smucker’s Jam, Post cereal and Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain bars.

Be sure to follow Facts Up Front on Twitter and Facebook for more information.

I have never heard of the facts up front. But really I could personally use a program like this in my own shopping.
