Choosing the right type of running shoe can mean the difference between comfort and cramping or chronic pain. Feet are divided up into three basic types, and you can find the best shoe for you when you know yours.

High Arches

High arches can usually be determined by making a few observations. First of all, the foot will have a very defined curve, and when you push your hand against the sole in the middle, you’ll feel rigidity. A bare foot print will make the foot appear to curve inward, with a narrow center. If you have this problem, you should have your feet re-measured once a year, as running tends to stretch the arches out and cause them to fall to some degree.

This condition causes the feet to turn to the outside when running, known as supination or underpronation, and causes the runner to become unstable. If you have high arches, purchasing flexible, cushioned running shoes can offer relief.

Flat Feet

This condition is the opposite to high arches. People with flat feet will have almost no curve to their foot, and no curve to the instep from toe to heel. Bare footprints with almost look like a distortion of a regular print. This condition is called overpronation, and causes the foot to roll toward the inside when walking or running.

Motion control or stability shoes will help provide comfort for people with flat feet. You can also purchase arch supports or orthotic inserts to lessen pain and discomfort.

Neutral Foot Structure

This is the most common foot type, with just enough arch to allow proper support, but not more than a 3/4 inch curve at the insole. People with neutral or normal feet can wear almost any type of shoe comfortably. However, wearing shoes made to correct or support other foot types can cause problems for people with a neutral foot shape.
