Orlando, Florida has been booming over the past 40 years. The construction of Disney World, Universal Studios, and several other tourist attractions has brought in trillions of dollars to the city of Orlando and the surrounding communities. Orlando is quite a diverse place and relatively low cost, with some communities offering affordable homes in the mid $100’s. Warm weather and a vast array of communities to live in make Orlando a very appealing place for retirees.

The weather is key for retirees. Orlando is warm throughout the year, with very mild winters. The sunshine is good for the skin and prime for sipping lemonade on the porch or short walks around attractive areas. In those years where seventy-five degrees is freezing, the warm climate of central Florida is more than suitable for the retiree community. Although Florida may have some extreme weather patters during the hurricane seasons, the majority of the year brings beautiful weather.

Orlando is immense in entertainment from its theme parks and attractions to the variety of shows the University of Central Florida puts on for cheap. The city hosts a ton of theatres including the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre, the Mad Cow Theatre, and the Theatre Downtown. Museums, restaurants, and live shows put on by Disney affiliates offer nonstop fun and events to experience.

Retirement communities are the rage in the city of Orlando. Orlando retirement communities fight for top spots amongst the 60 and older crowd. Many offer gated communities with more amenities than you can count. Gated communities offer golfing, boating, and spa treatments.

Low taxes and no state income tax are very attractive for retirees. With a sales tax of 6% and laws that protect Florida residents’ homes from being assessed at a value greater than 3% a year makes Orlando and surrounding communities and ideal tax haven. Additionally, Florida has no estate tax or inheritance tax to enforce so retirees and their children can benefit exponentially.

Retirees are able to truly relax with minimal worries in the city of Orlando. With the large influx of retirees in the past decade, a community has been established so it would be hard to feel lonely with the nearly two million residents in the metro Orlando area. A city with so much happiness and children’s smiling faces, a frown would be hard to come by. Additionally, websites offer almost 200 ways for seniors to save in Orlando. Orlando truly cares about its retirement community, offering discounts for seniors at most restaurants and grocery stores.

Orlando caters to the 55 and over crowd. Retirement communities provide opportunities to play golf every day of the year. Nearby lakes can be navigated daily if someone so chooses. Retirees’ grandchildren will want to visit grandma and grandpa for the chance to see Mickey and Minnie in the process.

Shows and live entertainment can be seen every night of the week. Tourists from all over the world visit the area hoping their dreams will come true at Disney World, providing many opportunities to spark conversation and share stories about where they’ve come from and how things are so different from back then. The city offers a large variety of outlets for the retirement community and is only looking to add more, such as the recent approval from the city to build a new performing arts center in 2007. Popular film festivals and movie theatres give retirees a way to spend an entire afternoon. There is no question as to why Orlando has become such a hot destination for retirees in search of fun and excitement after long years of work and minimal play.

Wow, I had no idea that Orlando is apparently the place to be for my age group! After reading why I can totally understand!

  2. Susan Smith says:

Sounds great, my Aunt just retired to Tampa FL which is similar to Orlando. She doesn’t miss the cold snowy winters she left behind and neither would I if I retired to Orlando or Tampa. No state income tax is a plus.
