This Love is Forever

Divorce is a hard thing – whether you are going through it as a child or as a parent.  When I went through my divorce, the only thing I held onto was what I didn’t want my boys to experience that I had experienced when my parents got divorced.  I knew the confusion, anger, sadness, resentment and all the feelings that go along with divorce and did not want my boys to have to experience those feelings.  But what I learned as a parent was that those feelings were natural and necessary for them to cope with divorce.  I was there to do my best to guide them along and deal with those feelings in as healthy a way as possible.  Then I was introduced to This Love is Forever, written by Mavis Prall Cohen and illustrated by Lizzie Prall.

SYNOPSIS:

I am the best of the marriage you see,
The part that lives on is here, inside me.

I’m made from the best of my dad and my mom.
And I know that their love for me always goes on.

Moms and dads don’t always stay together.
But parents and children love each other forever.

These are the final words of this little book with a big message: “This Love is Forever.” Written by a mother in response to her young daughter’s question, “Why are we divorced?” and illustrated by that same daughter a few years later, this book will give comfort to the whole family.

Blank pages at the back allow your children to add their own illustrations, so you can see how they view their changing family and help them talk about their feelings.

Read this book with your children to help know that the most important love in their lives will never change, no matter what else changes around them.

MY THOUGHTS:

I really like this book, as it puts life into perspective for both child and parent.  Sometimes it’s hard for us parents who are going through divorce to explain why divorce happened.  I commend Mavis Prall Cohen for writing this book and for her daughter on her drawings.  You can purchase the book through Amazon for only $8.38.  If you are going through a divorce, this is a book you’ll want to have on hand when your child starts asking questions about divorce that you aren’t sure how to answer.

As I come the the end of my divorce process with the kids starting to ask questions, this sounds like a good book to read with my kids.

  2. Maria Iemma says:

I wish there had been something like this book fifteen years ago when I was going through a divorce so I could have shared with my kids. It was a very hard time for all of us.
