When my parents passed away, they left me their huge 6 bedroom house. As a single woman, I really didn’t have any use for such a large house and started to look into ways I could make income from the house- while still keeping the home in the family.
I came up with the idea of starting my very own bed and breakfast! My town didn’t have one, and was close enough to some tourist attractions to (hopefully!) ensure a full house every night.
My parent’s style was very eclectic and they had picked up souvenirs from every one of their travels, so I had no problem at all gathering enough items from the home to turn each bedroom into a theme room. I rummaged through the boxes in the basement and started sorting items by theme. I ended up with a Safari themed room, two Romantic Getaway rooms, a Victorian themed room, one plain room for the less adventurous, and had one room left over for me!
I had the ‘bed’ part done – now I needed to work on ’breakfast!’
The kitchen already had the basics – dishes, silverware, etc- but I knew we would at least 5 of everything to make sure none of my guests ever went without something. I stocked the kitchen and fridge with groceries and snacks from my local wholesale club, and picked up the rest of my kitchen wares (serving platters, dishes, cups, bowls, tea pots, etc.) online at Culinary Depot. I also purchased tablecloths, vases, syrup dispensers and other odds and ends to make sure my guests truly felt at home during their stay.
Once I had everything in place, I went through and got all of the necessary permits & insurances (which were much less fun then the shopping and decorating!!)
6 months after I had this crazy idea, I was finally opening to doors to my very own Bed & Breakfast! Opening weekend came, and to my surprise we had a full house! I have had so much fun doing this, and have met so many interesting people all eager to share their stories as they pass through town. I strive to make my guests members of my family, and still keep in touch with some of the families that came to stay opening weekend! I would truly recommend opening a bed and breakfast to anyone who has the extra space, and is looking for some extra income!
